Southwest 10x on Select Categories

This week, Chase rolled out their co-branded (Southwest) credit card bonus points on select categories. I did not receive this offer; however, Southwest did select my wife. She received a request to earn 10x on up to $1,000 combined spent on gas stations, grocery stores, and amazon.com purchases that is good until December 31. This bonus is a great offer! We are running low on Southwest points, so that this bonus can get us another 10,000 points quickly. Flying out of Nashville Southwest is the best option for nonstop flights to most destinations, so we use a lot of Southwest miles.

Opportunity Cost

When looking at cards for specific categories, I think of the opportunity costs I would get with other cards.

Grocery Spend

Typically, for grocery spend, I either use my Citi Custom cash card, which gives me 5x on up to $500, or my American Express Gold card, which earns 4x points.

With Southwest points, you get 1.3 cents per point, equaling $130 in value on the 10,000 points. With the Citi option, I aim to redeem them at 2 cents per point, but 1.7 cents is a more reasonable option depending on transfer bonuses and what I would save them for. For 1.7 cents a piece, I would get $85 in value. And with a Gold card, I would get $80 in value.

Gas Stations

The card I usually use for gas is the Citi Premier. That earns 3x on gas stations, so the Southwest is an excellent option for this quarter.

Amazon.com

I usually buy Amazon gift cards at the grocery store, but it is good to only tie your money up with gift cards unless you know you will use them for something specific or more quickly.

Final Thoughts

Overall, this is a great offer to use this quarter. If you have a Chase co-branded card, Southwest, United, Areoplan, Avios cards, Marriott, or IHG card, you may be eligible for this offer. Here is the link to see if you are eligible. https://www.chase.com/mybonus
