Chase Freedom Unlimited Review

The Chase Freedom Unlimited is a workhorse of a credit card. It is part of the Ultimate Rewards program. It is the card I go to when I am not hitting a bonus category. Further down I will go over the benefits of the card.

Sign-Up Bonus

Earn $200 after you spend $500 and also you will earn 5% cash back from gas stations and grocery stores not including Target and Walmart on up to $12,000 spent in the first 12 months of having the card.

This is a really good bonus for opening a credit card with no annual fee. One small note to make is that you are not eligible for the bonus if you currently have this card or have received the bonus in the past 24 months.

Bonus Categories

Here are the bonus categories

• 5% on travel purchased through the Chase Ultimate Rewards

• 3% on dining at restaurants and delivery services

•3% on drugstore purchases

•1.5% on all other purchases

Overall, the Freedom Unlimited is a solid card for easy cash back on several categories. In the first year, you are earning a lot of cashback in every category, especially when the offer includes easy categories such as gas and groceries. If you can max out the 5% back on gas and groceries you can earn $600 and if you can earn from the other categories as well as hitting the $200 from the sign-up bonus, you come out with great rewards from this card.

Partner Benefits

Chase has other benefits tied to this card. You will earn 3 months free of the DashPass to get you $0 deliveries on select restaurants and then a 50% discount for the next 9 months. This is not a benefit I value that much, but it can get you to try the DashPass if you have been thinking about it.

You will earn 5% cash back on Lyft rides until March 31, 2025. That’s 3.5% on top of the 1.5% you will originally earn to give you a total of 5%.

Lastly, you will receive a 3-month Instacart membership, which can be very beneficial to some families.

Overall Thoughts

I think the Chase Freedom Unlimited is a great starter card for someone or for someone who has a couple of credit cards in their wallet already. This was the first credit card I ever applied for. I have other cards that I use to pay for restaurants but I use my Freedom Unlimited to get 1.5% back on all other purchases. If you are on team cash back, it is one of the most valuable “all-around” cards to have in your wallet.
