Q2 Credit Card Strategy

In this blog I want to help you save money on deals and help you save on travel and other experiences. One way I can travel as much as I do is because I can use credit cards to leverage my spending my everyday expenses to travel for a fraction of the cost.

I want to share what card I am using for each category of spend. We just finished the spend on my wife’s Amex Gold card that had a 90k offer for 6k spend over 6 months. Right now I am not working on anymore bonuses for a little bit as I am building a house this year so I will just be hitting bonus categories.

Dining and Amazon

Every quarter the Chase Freedom Flex has 5% on up to $1,500 spend on rotating categories. This quarter I am using it for Amazon and dining purchases. You can use it for fitness clubs as well but I am not using it for that. It is a good quarter if you spend a lot on Amazon or Dining or just load up your Amazon account for purchases later in the year.

Grocery

Grocery purchases is my one category where I spend the most. I am utilizing my Citi Custom Cash. I currently have two Citi Custom Cash cards. I will get to the other card in a minute. With the Custom Cash you can get 5% back on up to $500 in spend in select categories on the one you spend the most at. If I spend more than $500 in the month I will rotate the rest of my grocery spend on my Amex Gold card to get 4x Membership Rewards points.

Gas

I don’t spend a lot on Gas purchases however I would like to maximize the purchases I make. That is where my other Custom Cash comes in. I have been putting most of my gas purchases on there however at Costco they only take Visa and the Custom Cash is a Mastercard so I have go with my Freedom Unlimited but it’s normally $0.30/gal cheaper than other gas stations in my area.

Non-Bonus Spend

My non-bonus spend I tend to use my Bilt card. One reason is that I am trying to keep my Silver status which requires 10k spend in 2024 and in certain months Bilt has transfer bonuses of 1:2 to airlines and hotels on rent day.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I try to maximize my purchases to get as many points as I can travel and my memories I couldn’t have gotten if I didn’t not not have points to travel to places like Spain recently.
